In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “We Can Be Taught!.”
What makes a teacher great?
A great teacher is some one who can convey and express a passion for a subject, any subject. I feel if you are enthused and can express and pass on that enthusiasm then you are half way there already. A great teacher is also someone who can explain in varied and subtle ways not only how you do something, but the why. I feel the why is very important, sure you can learn something by rote, but then you only know it is that way, not why it should or must be that way.
Explain why 2+2 = 4 without an example? You know it is 4, but why. If you put 2 apples and 2 oranges together you have 4 pieces of fruit, you know, because you can see in front of you. Same with Art, Photography, Maths, Science……….sure there is a creative side (even in maths to a degree – Chaos theory?), but there are reasons as well. You should set your camera to a certain aperture to get a certain result. You should let one layer of paint dry before doing the next or it will all blend together………….etc.
A great teacher also must have patience and a sense of fun. Sure there are people who just don’t get it (Like me and maths!!) but a good teacher can have a few tricks in their bag and show different people different ways to learn.
