Tech Talk – Nikon 18-300mm Telephoto Zoom Lens, Review

Nikon 18-300mm

Nikon 18-300mm

Recently I did a post of on my new Tamron 90mm Macro lens and I mentioned Moth got a new lens too………this is it! The Nikon 18-300mm F/3.5 with ED and VR. This had just been released when we purchased it, and it is significantly smaller and lighter than the previous version…….so in essence it is smaller and lighter than even my 18-200mm and has a higher range! Bugger!

More specs can be found here from Nikon & there is a good review from Ken Rockwell.

I asked Moth to give a review as well, he kindly agreed. So Moth what do you think of your new Nikon Lens?

“It’s good, better than yours!”

DSC_0136-EditThat’s it folks, you heard it, and that’s probably as good as it gets……….I did steal it briefly to play with, I also used it at the wedding and Kids Christmas Shoot, and yes it takes a lovely photo, as one would expect from Nikon! Of course you pay for it, Nikon lenses are never cheap, but when this is your everyday go to lens and it stops Moth from stealing mine all the time, it is worth every penny!

Pros and Cons…………..well it’s smaller, lighter than the 18-200mm and the previous 18-300mm, it takes a great photo, it’s beautiful to use, the only bad point? Seriously; the price!

Til next time, happy snapping…………..

  1. Had me excited for a second . . . 18-300mm f/3.5

    . . . until I noticed it’s actually 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3.

This looks like a good lens for traveling. A little concerned about dust and stuff because of the operation of the lens (telescoping). I might have to rent one and see how it performs.

  2. I’m not a fan of the 18-300. It’s too big a range and can be temperamental on the focus. The 55-300 is more of a workhorse lens. I use it for most equestrian events.
Then if you really want to pull out all the stops, the Nikon 70-200 2.8 is amazing. Can pick up crisp clear nostril hairs at 100 yards. 🙂
