I was on the train the other day and I saw this guy reading a book, with a very interesting Title and cover. He was so engrossed in this book he never once lifted his eyes from it and devoured the pages very quickly. I don’t normally stare at people on trains, but I just had to. I then proceeded to get my phone out and google the book. The Story of Alice by Robert Douglas-Fairhurst
Alice seems to be all the rage lately, I just went to a themed Mad Hatters birthday Bash for a friend and there is a new Alice in Wonderland Movie coming out soon isn’t there?
This book was released last year and looks to be a very interesting read, need to find myself a copy of this.
SYNOPSIS
Shortlisted for the 2015 Costa Biography Award. BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week. Wonderland is part of our cultural heritage – a shortcut for all that is beautiful and confusing; a metaphor used by artists, writers and politicians for 150 years. But beneath the fairy tale lies the complex history of the author and his subject: of Charles Dodgson, the quiet academic, and his second self, Lewis Carroll – storyteller, innovator and avid collector of ‘child-friends’. And of his ‘dream-child’, Alice Liddell, and the fictional alter ego that would never let her grow up. This is their secret story: a history of love and loss, of innocence and ambiguity, and of one man’s need to make Wonderland his refuge in a rapidly changing world. Drawing on previously unpublished material, Robert Douglas-Fairhurst traces the creation and influence of the Alice books against a shifting cultural landscape – the birth of photography, changing definitions of childhood and sexuality and the tensions inherent in the transition between the Victorian and modern worlds.
Sounds delicious doesn’t it.
I took this picture of Dark Alice (Model Jema) on the same day as I discovered the book, even as I did this shoot in Hosier Lane, I kept thinking of her as dark Alice. I have darkened the doorway recess behind her, added the white rabbit and text and that is it, the bright and dark colours on the wall were all there already.
I just love Melbourne’s hidden gems and the creative vibe of the people who live here, yes there are the suits and such but our underbelly (so to speak) beats with a passionate heart!Art, Music, Fashion, and yes even sport.

Great choice, Julz, although I feel that mine never quite reach the excellence of yours and the others. However, I love taking part and here’s mine for this week. Looking forward to next weeks. Thank you.

Hi Trev, it’s not a contest, it’s just for fun. Can I make one piece of criticism? And please don’t take any offence, I love your creative artwork, but the font is a little hum-drum. Have you tried some free fonts like http://www.1001freefonts.com/
you can download some really cool fonts that would really make a cover like yours stand out. I hope I have not overstepped……as I do love your posts and covers

Sorry, I realise it’s not a contest, my bad use of words. Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate what you say about the font. I do have an awful lot of fonts already, but I think I get a little over excited and want to get the picture finished, hence I should spend more time on making sure things like the font are right. I do agree with you, it does look ‘naff’. I appreciate your words. Looking forward to next weeks theme now. Thank you.

Thanks Trev, I do worry if I give CC some people might take it the wrong way. And yes I know what you mean about getting excited over a piece, one thing I am having trouble learning is to slow down and take my time. Also to have a greater appreciation of font usage in artwork. I’m not perfect either (no one is), but learning to slow down is the hard part. 🙂
