I recently acquired some extension tubes for my Sonya7ii (this a tube fitted to a camera between the body and lens to shorten the distance of closest focus of an object so that close-up pictures can be taken). As much as I love the new Sony, I don’t have a macro lens and they are expensive, this option was much cheaper and I have been told is amazing to work with on the Sony’s Peak Manual Focus.
So I spent a few days playing and learning, and then I found this Dandelion Seed in the backyard and knew I had to spend 5 minutes with it for this week’s Regular Random.
Most are shot with F/3.5 or F/4.5 a couple on F/1.8, all ISO100, focal distance about 15-20mm, normally my 50mm prime is minimum 500mm, so the extension tubes do make quite the difference. I’m still a little hit and miss with the focus on occasion and the focus is a little soft.
This post is my Regular Random, where I spend just five minutes photographing a relatively random subject. Here are the rules so you can join in!
- choose a subject or a scene
- spend five minutes photographing it – no more!
- try to not interfere with the subject, instead see it from many angles, look through something at it, change the light that’s hitting it
- have fun!
- tag your post #regularrandom and pingback to Desley’s post

I learned something today…. Very interesting topic. The focus mode of the subject. Fantastic!

Lovely shots Julz. Are the tubes easy to work with on the Camera? I’ve never tried them. I have expensive lenses instead 😂😂😂

Yes they are relatively easy to work with, I found it took very little time to get used to them, now just refining them. Most people say manual focus is easier, and I think they are right. I was using too high an aperture to to start with. Need to tryF /9 – F/11 and see how that performs instead

Interesting. “Normal” macro works better at F/8 ish if you can get enough light in. And I find if I want to get close, I need to switch to manual focus too.

yes, so it seems it is not much different, it’s mostly the cost and convenience. A standard Macro lens is for my camera at any rate $600+ the extension tubes were $70…………so almost a 1/10th the price, but they are fiddly and a bit of a pain and proper marco is a little easier
