We recently visited William Ricketts Sanctuary in Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges. We have not been for nearly three years, and it’s quite astounding how much my photography has improved since our last visit, check out my post from way back then.
I seemed to capture fairly similar images, it is not an overly large place and there are only so many statues;
Situated in a ferny glade in the Dandenongs, William Ricketts Sanctuary is a place of beauty and tranquility, due both to the natural setting and the mystical sculptures half hidden among ferns along the pathways. It is a place for quiet reflection and for contemplation of the essence of the vision of William Ricketts, With 92 sculptures of people and animals to explore in their magnificent natural surroundings.
It is free entry, but a donation is requested to help maintain the site, some items are sorely in need of repair and restoration. Sadly not too many fungi around either, not as cold and wet as it was this time three years ago. Still, Moth and I enjoyed a lovely wander through here. He had not ventured into photography on our last visit, so he got to capture it all for the first time. I personally adore all the fine little details, especially in the animals and children’s faces.

It’s a place where I could spend quite a bit of time. Thanks for the visual treats.

Great sculpture….shame there is so much damage caused by bushfires and the elements 😔

Unfortunately its run on donations and very exposed to the elements…plus a few bushfires have gone through in the last few years

Any particular reason why the works are not regarded as a national treasure, and protected as such?

No, I guess the Government does not see it that way, we actually have several private parks with statues similar to this, only so much government funds to go around

This place looks absolutely amazing, not exactly what I was expecting when I saw the title William Rickets Sanctuary in it. It definitely educated me for here I thought all of Australian bushland is dry. The photographs of the sculptures are astounding as though you’ve caught the forest nymphs and dryads in flesh. They are an absolute treat.

thank you. Actually, quite a lot of Australia has tropical, subtropical and temperate rain forest such as this, mostly along the coastal regions. Even in QLD there are vast tracks of rain forest. Inland Australia is arid and dry.
