Share your world – 7th Jan 2020

Can you believe we are a week into a whole new decade already? I would be lying if I had said I have been super busy, but I have been doing a few bits and pieces. I needed to write some more articles for Photofocus, I wanted to capture my lotus buds opening. I have swum in a friends pool and drank wine, and my house is nice and clean and tidy, always a good way to start the year.

Sadly the infamous Australian bushfires have taken their toll on everyone, frustration and pain and loss. The smoke haze obliterating the sun and plunging us back into wintery conditions. It hurts the eyes and makes it difficult to breathe and I am nowhere near the actual fires; HOW they are coping is beyond me.

But this is Australia, we will band and stand together, we will recover and rebuild, fire is sadly a way of life and about every 10 years we get some really bad ones like now. Black Friday (1939 & 2009), Black Saturday (2009), Ash Wednesday (1983), just to name a few…ALL truly horrendous fires. These current ones have yet to be named.

QUESTIONS:

Is ‘hello” enough for you these days?  I don’t see why not…although it is usual G’day or Hiya here in Australia. Is there really a need for more. Often when you ask someone ‘How are they?’ you are usually answered with ‘fine’ or ‘great’. Often people don’t wish to burden others with their problems, or perhaps even feel ashamed to show weakness. Why complain about our minimal first world problems, when there are other people out there truly suffering? I guess that is why I love to blog. I can open myself and say pretty much what I want, and then to the rest of the world, I am bloody fantastic.

Do you believe in Murphy?   For those who aren’t familiar with Murphy, here’s a wee explanation:  Murphy’s law is an adage or epigram that is typically stated as: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong”. Oh, Murphy is alive and well. I actually spent the last 10 years or so literally working for Murphy! My MD who walked out on a sinking ship was usually the cause of our woes. But when you think everything is going great, Murphy’s Law hits and anything and everything that could go wrong does. Some call it Karma too…I try to play nice with Karma. Let’s face it, Karma can be a real bitch!

Does evil come from within?  If so, why? Ohhh this is a toughy. I think there are evil thoughts and then there are evil deeds. Some are drawn to it by nature, some are forced into by need. Also, one persons version of evil is different from another. Some people believe they are working for the greater good, that their belief is just and whole. History is full of bad people doing bad things, for what they thought was the right reason. Would you kill to protect your family? Would you fight to house and feed your family? Until you are faced with truly difficult decisions, how can we know HOW we would react?

Are intelligent people more or less happy than others? What defines intelligence? Don’t they say ignorance is bliss? I don’t know if intelligence can make you happy, just like money and possessions cannot really make you happy. It all boils down to what MAKES you happy. Intelligence can sometimes make life easier, but that does not mean happier. Scientific exploration has opened new technology to us, especially in the last 100 years, but it has not solved world problems. We supposedly have very intelligent world leaders, who seemingly are doing really dumb things. I think there is street smarts, academic smart and people smarts…all different types of intelligence. I know some really smart academic people who have no idea how to do basic things. I know really street smart people who are barely literate. Who is to say what is better.

Gratitude Section

I guess this week gratitude goes out to all the emergency service workers, volunteered and otherwise. We have the County Fire Authority (CFA – volunteers), Royal Fire Services (RFS Volunteers), State Emergency Services (SES – Volunteers), Canadian, US and New Zealand firefights lending a hand. We have the Army Reserves and Armed Forces.

I guess that is something many people do not know about Australia…most of our firefighters and SES works are ALL Volunteers! They have put their life on hold to fight fires, some have been at this with no pay for weeks, months. Some have lost their own homes and businesses and get NO payment for their services. We have been fighting to change this, perhaps now with the world looking on, it may change.

Death stalks us with fire
Death stalks us with fire

I created this image this week; the bushfires – it is everywhere, the news, the radio, social media, impossible to escape the images the struggles, the loss. Sadly, many of these fires have probably been started by someone. One person has already been charged with multiple atrocities, there will be more. I guess that is what is SO SAD. Mother Nature is one thing, but to hear someone started these fires on purpose? WHY?

Let’s hope the rains come soon…
