This was our first real taste of the Southern Isle, we had our own car and could stop and start whenever we wanted. Even though the weather was terrible this little town found a spot in my heart. Actually I loved the whole area. I think Christchurch was one of my favourite towns in NZ, funny isn’t it?
Day 5 was mostly spent going from Rotorua Airport, then flying to Wellington (really cool LOTR & The Hobbit display at airport) and then onto Christchurch. We spent the afternoon doing some shopping, picking up rental car and mostly boring things. However we did go to the Botanical Gardens in the evening.
We awoke to low cloud, mist and rain, not pleasant, but undaunted we drove the 2 hours from Christchurch to Akaroa. A quaint old fashioned fishing village with a French Quarter. Very cute. We went on our cruise, as wet and windy and wild as it was it was exhilarating to be out on the sea. We barely spotted dolphins, we saw 1 penguin, no whales and lots of seals. However, it was a great morning out. We then had Fish and Chips for lunch (of course) in the village.
On our return, we then drove and wandered around Christchurch, but I’ll leave that to another post.
