Share Your World – 28th March, 2017

Does your first or middle name have any significance (or were you named after another family member)? Ann…..my middle name is Ann (No E), I don’t think there was ever any real significance, just seemed to go with Julie. There were a LOT of JulieAnn’s around when I was a kid.

Music or silence while working? It always used to be music, but after a houseful of kids and animals and Xbox games, their loud music and the never ending TVs on in our house, these days it is quiet. If there is no one home I turn everything OFF. I like to sit outside in the quiet with a cuppa and my journal and think. Sometimes I have music on when I am creating, but honestly, once I am in the zone the music can stop and I don’t even notice.

If you had a special place for your three most special possessions (not including photos, electronics, people or animals), what would they be? Well you pretty much ruled everything else out. My Journal, sits beside me on the desk or in my bag. My wedding, engagement and eternity rings sit on my fingers, I have a jewellry box for other treasures (Nan’s engagement ring) my most special possessions apart from those are my family (furry and non), my camera gear and my PC.

The Never List: What are things you know you never will do? This is kind of hard……sounds silly, but things I thought I would never, ever do – I have now actually done! Never, ever thought you would get me in a Helicopter; done it. Stood in front of a window in a high rise building/lookout – done it (albeit my back was to the window). So most things I would have said never ever…….are doubtful, but not impossible.

In saying that, I don’t think I could ever hurt, maim or kill someone. I would never drive drunk. I don’t think I could live somewhere really, really cold (I’m talking below 10C).

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up? I am still on a creative high from the Alice shoot I did the week before, that is one shoot, that just keeps on giving. I am also grateful for the art I do, the friends I have made, the things I have learnt and places travelled. This weekend, we are off on another adventure, into the Australian Outback. We are going to places Moth and I have never been, or to places I have not been in so long, I can no longer recall them. Ten days of dust, flies, mosquitoes, kangaroos and and never ending open road. Can’t wait!

Alice, down the rabbit hole

Well that is it from me, due to be away, I may not post next week, but I wish you all happy snapping and safe travels…

Joyful Flight

What is the most incredible natural venue that you’ve ever seen in person? Are you kidding? Oh My where to start, sun rises over Uluru and Kata Juta, sun rising over The Remarkables (NZ) with fresh snow, Milford Sound (NZ), helicopter flight over Kings Canyon (NT) New Zealand (take your pick too many spot to choose), 12 Apostles (great Ocean Road), Cape Tribulation, Church of the Good Shepherd. Stop me now…

dsc_3610-edit

How many siblings do you have? What’s your birth order? [I refuse to admit, that I actually have an older brother] – Only child with a dead head/idiot in the family somewhere. You cannot pick and choose your family, Huh? What a crock, my friends are my family and I have a wonderful family.

If you were a shoe, what kind would you be and why? Flip Flops (we call them thongs here in Australia)……I live in them Winter or Summer, so comfortable and reliable, but when they snap…………you KNOW it!

What is the strangest/weirdest thing you have ever eaten? I am a bit of a sook sometimes, if it wriggles I am not overly interested……however I have had witchetty grub soup……tastes a lot like peanut butter. I have also had snake, croc, emu, buffalo, and kangaroo.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?  I am so grateful to all my friends (see above aka family) who came to say hello and support me at my gallery exhibit last Friday.

This selfi is just a few! I was also grateful for a four day weekend, I wish we had more of them! This week, I am an open book……….it feels really weird, last year just about every weekend was booked up with stuff, this year I am taking things a little slower, but I am working hard behind the scenes to get new projects started and other exciting things happening.

Share your World – Week 2, 2017

Each week Cee challenges us to share our thoughts, our dreams, our quirks with the world, last year I was a bit hit and miss, this year I am attempting to be more regular; 2 for 2, so far, so good 🙂

If you lost a bet and had to dye your hair a color of the rainbow for a week, what color would it be?  Lost a bet, who are you kidding, I have done it for fun!! I have had red and purple and pink. The only problem that frustrates me is that my hair wont hold colour very well and it fades so quickly…….so rather than spending a small (or is that large) fortune on hair dye I gave up and am sandy blonde/ mouse brown these days.

If you could choose one word to focus on for 2017, what would it be? Actually I was just discussing this with another blogger yesterday, I want BRAVER to be my word for this year. 2016 I was Brave……….I did so much, learnt so much, met so many wonderful people and I achieved some phenomenal goals. 2017 I want to be even Braver big emphasis on the ‘R’. It’s funny the things I did last year I was so scared of doing and now seem common place………I want to move my comfort zone again! You know what really scares us in life? Fear………that’s it FEAR of whatever. I hate heights; yet I pushed myself to fly in a helicopter – AMAZING – I am terrified of talking to strangers……some of those strangers are now my friends! I want more this year and I am going push myself to get it, be brave and step forth little grasshopper!

What was one thing you learned last year that you added to your life? See previous statement lol. Seriously, I am an artist, a damn good one. I am an artist that deserves to be published, printed and purchased. I am talented and imaginative, slightly crazy and erratic and I now embrace that. I am Middle aged, I am fat, I am unfit, I am no beauty queen…….but people love me for who I am on the inside, I mean really like me. For years I was shy and self conscious because I felt unworthy. Now I am slowly but steadily moving out of the shadows and into the bright light. It all sounds so silly, but it is amazing and life changing. WOW I went deep there huh?

If life was ‘just a bowl of cherries’… which fruit other than a cherry would you be..? Definitely something where you have to peel back layers; maybe a banana? I am sweet and a little bent? A dark sweet/sour cherry does seem to fit my personality. Maybe a lemon, looks nice and fresh and sunny, but can be very sour and bitter? lol Maybe not…….maybe I’ll stick with the banana, I like bananas.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up? Every week I just say I am grateful for life in general, but let’s try some specifics. I started the Brook Shaden’s 20 Day Portfolio challenge; WOW! as per usual Brooke hits the soft spots, I have met some amazing people and learnt a lot about my own art, how I see the world and how much of a mess my online portfolio is. I jump around with my art so much, but I have learned as much as I really like tinkering around with image manipulation and composites, my favourite pieces of art are actually my concept shoots; The Masks we were series, Dapper Rabbit Series, the Lady in Red Series and my new one you have not yet seen.So I think I will maybe concentrate on that a little more. Either in whole series or just more separate shots. I also need to up my game on my portfolio………but these things take time.

Buddy (the dog) goes back to the vet for his 5 week post op check tomorrow, hopefully they will give us the go ahead to start taking him for small walks…….he is feeling really good and wants to walk and run and god help us, jump on the furniture! He is suffering from cabin fever and so is our other dog, who has had many walks either. It will be so good to get them both back outside, even if only for a little while. I am hoping we will soon be able to let him roam freely on our own property outside as well, it’s not big, but there are steps and rocks to climb up and down.

Hidden Costs

I have another Concept shoot tonight, which will prove interesting, using my youngest daughter as a model again. I have been wanting to do another shoot, she has the most amazing LONG, long hair and she said I had better shoot before tomorrow, as she is getting it all cut off and donating to wigs for cancer patients; what a wonderful thing to do! She has spent the last nine years growing and tomorrow it all comes off, so tonights shoot will be a sort of last hoorah!

Well that’s it, I hoped you enjoyed this week’s post…………til next week, happy snapping.

Share Your World – Week 1, 2017

I was reading through Emilio’s SYW and I swear he plucked my answers out of my head in most cases. So it seems I could copy and paste or try and do my own for Cee’s SYW this week……….another year, a new set of questions.

Would you prefer to receive a unicycle, bicycle, tricycle or motorcycle? I used to own a dirtbike, but several accidents (which WERE my fault) made me realise I needed to stay OFF the road. Road bikes and me, or the cars at any rate scary the willies out of me. I applaud the courage and occasional stupidity of road bike users. I don’t like bicycles for the same reason, got hit too many times as a kid and not always my fault. Explain a lot doesn’t it?

What is one thing you’d like to accomplish this year? Honestly? I would love to make enough money with my art, selling pieces, teaching, creating tutorials that I can quite my day job. Fingers crossed.

What was one of the highlights of 2016 for you? Wow, so many, I guess being chosen as Featured Artist a magazine and creating a tutorial for Shiftart.com

Would you prefer to fly a kite or fly in a hot air balloon? I love to watch hot air balloons and kites, balloons are more fun, but you will probably never see me in one. Mind you I did say the same thing about helicopters, but I have actually done that. I don’t mind flying as much in a plane, as I cannot see the ground……..but I am not a great flyer either 🙂

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I am going to change this slightly…….what am I grateful for in 2016? I lost no one in 2016 that I knew personally………..although it was a bad year for famous singers, actors, writers etc…..but personally everyone I know made it through safely. I had no surgeries last year, yay, I made it through the whole year without the need for medical intervention, apart from a recurring blocked ear……but that is nothing compared to near liver and kidney failure and weeks in hospital and ICU, also no injuries requiring surgery, no tests, procedures or ‘stuff’ that required me to even visit a hospital……….THAT I am truly grateful for.

Also my family had a lovely Christmas and NYE, nothing grand of exciting, just togetherness.

dsc_5943

The Week ahead…………..my oh my, 2017 is going to be a blast. I have my first two concept shoots booked in this weekend and I am as keen as punch to get to it, I have really done nothing for the past month and I am done with that. I am going to push myself even further this year and hope to be part of something truly exciting and exceptional. I am a coach/mentor for this years Awake intake and already there is such a buzz of excitement and activity. My Kaizen Project group have taken on 2017 with some very exciting topics and I plan on wrapping up my Dapper Rabbit Concept this year and maybe taking on a new project. And because all that isn’t enough I am doing Brooke Shaden 20 day Portfolio Challenge.

Share Your World – Week 51

This week is Cee’s special holiday edition of Share Your World, it’s only a few days ’til Christmas……….where oh where has this year gone. So much has happened locally and globally, so many highs and lows.

christmas-tree_jp

What types of food is associated with your holiday? We celebrate Christmas, but we are not religious. This time of year to me means, family, friends and food. Good weather, beach, sun and water and longer days. Time spent in fun. I love some many things that come with Christmas; fruit mince pies, plum pudding, turkey…….so much stuff either I cannot eat or have to change and that buggers up the taste 😦

Australians’ are renowned for fresh seafood at this time of year; something else I cannot eat…but there is the good old BBQ. We are in fact having one tonight, the first of the Christmas festivities at our house.

Do you travel for your holiday? Usually yes, we go away the week before Christmas, when everyone else is madly shopping, arguing for car parks, and the normal madness we are soaking up sunshine somewhere lovely. Last year we did the Great Ocean Road, the year Before we did Canberra and Beechworth, a few years before that was Port Douglas. Oh how I long for a tropical beach, but we opted to do Buddy’s (the dog) surgery instead. See HOW much I love my animals? I opted to spend huge amounts on him instead of me and then opted to stay home and care for him. Next year, next year I will go away again. Read more of our travels….here.

Is it a religious or spiritual holiday? Honestly neither, it is a commercial holiday, with food, wine and presents. But we do enjoy just getting together with family friends and neighbours. I have no intention of going to church or hearing about the ‘true’ meaning of Christmas. To me it is just about fun.

Is there a gift exchange? You bet your bottom dollar there is. In my immediate family it is quite a serious thing, we have list drawn up of stuff we want and people mark off what’s been brought, that way we don’t end up with crap we don’t want. Most of our friends we just have a get together, but we have one family we always exchange gifts with. Again there are lists for ideas, but we set a modest limit. My husbands family, there are no gifts, not since his Mum passed many years ago, we will catch up with them in the New Year. My Folks………well I don’t see my brother (at all) and I get gift for my parents, they try hard but often miss the mark with us girls, the guys are easy, Dad buys booze! lol

How long does the celebration last?

I tend to celebrate quietly all December long, carols in the car, I do all the work hampers myself, I complain every year, but it is fun. I make sure I am organised early, then I can kick back and relax when the last final week of madness hits. So many people say how envious of how calm and organised I am every Christmas, but I have been off work for days now and I’ve had plenty of time for cooking and cleaning.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I am glad Buddy came through his surgery and first week, it was a hard and difficult week, but things are improving. Although he cannot be left locked in the laundry, he frets to the point if complete panic attack and mental break down. He cries if we leave his sight, I fear this could become quite a problem if he doesn’t calm down soon.

I am looking forward to tonight’s party and then a few days of quiet to do with as I wish. I know I put way too much emphasis on Christmas day, which I know is usually a fizzer, but it is what it is and I have all the Children around me for Christmas night………that will be fun, a BBQ, drinks and general silliness will happen, maybe a game of Monopoly or something?

So from my family to yours, again I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

~ Julz, xo

Share Your World – Week 45

Every week Cee asks three questions, with which we get to answer and share a little of our world with our readers and friends.

Describe your own outlook on life in seven words or less. Loyalty, truth, justice, enjoy, fun, love, cherish

Where do you like to vacation? I do love somewhere tropical, but anywhere where there is something to explore and photograph

Candy factories (sweets or treats including chocolate) of the entire world have become one and will now be making only one kind of candy. Which kind, if you were calling the shots? I hate to admit it, but I LOVE Chocolate, it doesn’t always love ME back, but I do love it. Especially Milk or mostly dark chocolate….not a big fan of white.

Complete this sentence: Something that anyone can do that will guarantee my smile is… Bad jokes! Or simply offer me a smile of yours. Chrisa is right a smile from a friend or even a complete stranger will melt most hearts and put a smile on your dial. My Kids and animals usually make me smile (or swear).

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up? I never know where to start on this one, I am grateful for every single day I am still on this planet. But I guess I must say my friends and family and the support I get to push myself and my art further.

Share your World – Week 41

Every week Cee asks us to Share Our (Your) World by answering a few simple questions, but sometimes the questions are harder than they seem.

  1. Do you believe in love at first sight? I am not sure about Love at First Sight, although I did fall instantly in love with both my children and my dog at first sight, so yes I guess I do, but is really what the question is asking? If it means romantic love, no not really; LUST – Yes, but Love not so much…….I think it takes time to really make that romantic connection. Sure the sparks can fly and there can be a chemical reaction, but I do not believe that is love, just simple lust; and there is nothing wrong with that.
  2. Your first car? My first car was a hotted up Mazda 1800, it was nicknamed Boomer for the awesome sound system it had in it lol.
  3. Who taught you to ride a bike? How did it go? I have no idea……….isn’t that funny? I remember riding a bike, but I cannot remember who taught me, most probably my Dad or older brother I would guess. I remember some pretty awful accidents (usually because I was not watching where I was going), but not my first time out. Could it be so horrific I have mentally blocked it out?
  4. Ugly and rich or beautiful and poor? Really? Can’t I be rich AND beautiful? Well I’ve been poor, so definitely rich, can’t say I’ve ever been beautiful on the outside, so how about beautiful on the inside and moderately wealthy? lol
  5. What was the first dish you could cook? Well apart from toast or cereal (not that I consider cereal cooking), it was probably a good old fashioned roast, nice and easy; lamb, beef, pork or chicken, not idea…..but a lamb roast is my personal favourite.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

dsc_2355

On saturday we had the most glorious weather and I spent it all outside, visited the lovely Royal Botanic Gardens, snapped this stunning photo of my new favourite flower; peony in the Chinese Garden section. Then spent Saturday evening with some terrific friends……what could be better?

Next week…….hmmm I have a blank slate this weekend, very unusual – so I guess I am looking forward to what this weekend may surprise me with. This warmer weather and occasional sunshine has me thinking about the beach, so maybe we might take a drive?

Whatever this week holds I hope it is brilliant, for all of you

~ Julz

Share Your World – Week 40

My how this year has flown, we are already into October and the end of the Year is just around the corner. Cee’s SYW this week is questions from TheHappyQuitter’s kids workshops, how cute!

For the next two weeks the questions are from kids.  The Happy Quitter wrote me this weekend and told me about her workshop she does for neighborhood kids and the some of the kids had some suggestions for the Share your World challenge.

Why did you start blogging? It’s funny I started blogging to expand my Social Media presence for possible job opportunities, that’s where I discovered photography and this amazing community. I am hopelessly obsessed with photography, more so than the jobs market.

A piece of clothing you still remember? Moonboots, Uggboots (Still around) and Fru Fru skirts all from the 80’s. We had such terrible taste in clothing back then. Like Cee My Mum used to make all my clothes as a small child and it wasn’t til I got older I rebelled and wanted store bought clothes, not that my family could ever afford any big name labels as such.

Who are you trying to reach with your blog? No-one and everyone? I think I have a little bit to offer many people, but in reality I guess mostly photographers, perhaps travel; I don’t really write about much else these days. Like I said I am obsessed with Photography………..and travel.

Is there a stuffed animal in your bedroom? Yes a few, but only small, I have a few Looney Tunes characters which the kids bought us from a holiday to Warner Brothers World; Tweety Bird and Tazzie Devil.

The best birthday present ever? Growing up as a kid we never really had much money, we had enough for what we needed, but rarely what we wanted. Sure I can afford stuff now, but my hubby is hopeless with presents, so I frequently just buy my own…….but there is no fun in that! One year I remember fondly, my family won a trip to Europe, big excitement and while we were in France I had my 10th Birthday. I was really upset because all my friends were back home in Australia. My Mum organised a small party with a few kids at the beach we were staying at and we had a picnic on the beach and had lemonade (a real treat back then) and Mum made sandwiches and cupcakes and we built sandcastles and chased the waves and my Mum bought me a Sandy Doll (Kind of like a Barbie Doll – the UK kids will know). It was a wonderful birthday on the French Riviera, albeit in late Autumn, so quite cold.

What would surprise me about you? Not alot I am an open book, although perhaps the fact that I hate horror movies! I know some of my concept shoots are quite creepy and spooky, but I hate blood and guts horror movies.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up? I guess I am grateful I survived my Tummy Bug and it was not worse than it was. I am grateful for my new lights my hubby convinced me to purchase and for him putting up my new backdrop rig. My Son-in-Law is currently visiting with us this week. I am going to see Matilda the Musical tomorrow with my daughters. This weekend is up in the air, not sure yet.

~ Julz

Share Your World – Week 38

With your answers, please remember we are in the SYW world which may not always match our reality.

Are you a hugger or a non-hugger?

What is your least favorite Candy?

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “fun”?

List of Favorite Smells: What smells do you love? Whether it’s vanilla scented candles or the smell of coffee in the morning or the smell of a fresh spring rain…make a list of all the things you love for a little aromatherapy.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

boat-on-water

Stranded

Are you a hugger or a non-hugger? I’m not really a hugger, I’m not really that much of a touchy feely person. I will hug people I am fond of, but just a quick hug and that’s about it. My Hubby complains that I’m not more affectionate, but it’s just not in my nature, I guess. There is one exception, babies and my fur kids. I will happily hold and cuddle a baby or my animals for ages…….I have no idea why they are any different from normal people?

What is your least favorite Candy? Aniseed or anything that gets stuck to you teeth, you know the kind that rips out fillings? Ouch, pass on those. I love chocolate, and jellybeans and fruit jubes……..yummo.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “fun”? Mmmm a bit of a tough one, some things I will endure to get a great photograph, but they are often not fun, I love to laugh, so if I’m laughing I’m generally having fun. A good book, a good Movie, they can also be fun. Playing on the deck with my animals in Sunshine, that is fun. Talking over coffee with a friend is great fun, dinner with friends can be lots of fun, board games with the family…….loads of fun (especially if you add a few drinks!). Playing in the studio with my still life images..definitely, playing on the PC with pretty picture – absolutely.

List of Favorite Smells: Coffee………..that smell will wake me out of a coma, love the smell of fresh coffee. Vanilla……..I love the smell of vanilla, it is calming and relaxing and makes me feel ‘home’, as does lavender. I really enjoy the strong, tart smell of citrus, tangy and sweet. Baked cookies…….yummmmmmm. I detest perfume, yup I’ve said it, I hate perfume I am yet to find one that I think smells really good, in fact I have been known to spend days in bed with a migraine after being stuck in an elevator with one of those women who insist on wearing a bottle a day, especially of something like Opium, honestly who ever invented that perfume needs to be shot! But I rant 🙂 . I love the smell just after summer rain, when everything is washed clean and the dust has settled back to the ground.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I’m not grateful for anything in particular this week, just life in general. When you almost loose it you are grateful for every day you get, I suppose.Saturday is supposed to warm(ish) and sunny, with no rain until later in the evening, so we are hoping to get out and shoot some canola fields. I had another spark of inspiration, thanks to a friend (you know who you are), so I have some ideas for a small little concept shoot in mind. Just need to find the right field!

Well that’s it for this week, I hope you all have a brilliant weekend…safe travels and happy snapping…

~ Julz

Share Your World – Week 37

Every week Cee asks us three seemingly random questions about our lives…Share Your World

Have you ever owned a rock, pet rock, or gem that is not jewerly?
I vaguely remember having a pet rock as a kid, it was all the rage back then, I have no idea if I ever named it and I certainly was never obsessed with it, it was just something I had………I think.

What is your greatest strength or weakness? I try to see the good in people, often that bites me in the butt, I can’t always see scumbags for what they really are. I am passionate and creative, slightly weird and probably a little dark, but still very creative.

What makes you feel grounded? My Family and closest friends generally make me feel grounded and praise me when needed and deflate my ego when needed too, lol. And nature, I love the ocean and water in general, not so much to swim, but to watch and listen. Sometimes I just sit in my garden, watch and listen.

Would you rather never be able to eat warm food or never be able to eat cold food? Cold as in ice-cream……..mmm I guess I could go without, but I do love my warm or hot food, especially on cold days like today. Toasted Bagel with shredded chicken, creamed cheese, sweet chilli and baby spinach and a nice hot cup of pumpkin soup!

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?  Last week I got to spend a whole day with a WP Friend, actually I would like to change that to just friends…….WP, Facebook or whatever we talk frequently about ‘stuff’ and Saturday was a wonderful day to chat, get creative and just co exist in the same space…….it was nice and loads of fun.

This week………..I have mostly this weekend off from everything; work, shoots (I have a quickie head shot shoot and that’s it), to rewind and catch up on some other stuff, I’m house getting a hair cut, first one in over 12 months lol – nervous!

I also thought I’d share some of my favourite images from last week……enjoy

Til next time, enjoy the rest of your week…

~ Julz
