Missed the point?

So many posts and pretty pictures of things people did, got or gave for Valentine’s Day, Me? Nothing I don’t buy into it all…..I feel it has become all too commercial. Perhaps it is my ‘bah humbug’ thing. I don’t need a date on the calendar to say I love you, we say it all the time. I don’t need a card or flowers or a piece of jewelry; never have, never will. That’s not to say I don’t want those things, but for that ONE DAY a year the prices get jacked right up, I go go without or wait a little longer. Moth will come home several times a year with flowers, just because he saw them and thought of me, or my birthday or our anniversary; that means more to me than having to buy flowers on Valentine’s Day because the media said you HAVE to. If we are wandering the markets or boutique stores and I find a piece of jewellry I adore, he will buy it for me, no questions asked.

Have I perhaps missed the point? I don’t think so, in an age where everything has become so commercialised, is it just a waste of time and money? Some people are homeless & hungry, some people have no job, no family, no loved one. Some people are sick and dying. Isn’t it enough to say “I LOVE YOU” without all the hype? If your man didn’t buy you flowers or jewellry from Tiffany & Co………….would the world suddenly stop turning? No I didn’t think so. And what about the Single people who are made to feel especially unloved? Not fair, I have one daughter who is married and one who is single. My Married daughter was alone and felt bad, my single daughter said what the hell and made a night of it with single friends; movie and drinks.

I think too much pressure is put on people, and some women (not all, and some men I guess) make it worse for perpetuating it all. dsc_7209

So for all you, my friends on the day AFTER Valentine’s Day……..I wish you love (where ever, whatever and whomever that maybe), happiness and friendship. Perhaps next year, save your pennies but flowers on another day, just because you care and use that Valentine’s Day money for a greater good? Or not?

Portrait Perfection Photoshop Actions Review…

I was recently approached by the wonderful people at Sleek Lens whom asked if I would like to try and review their Portrait Perfection Photoshop Actions Collection. Now I spend a great deal of time in Photoshop and I frequently use actions to as a tool to speed up my workflow, they do not stifle creativity and if used well, can really make an artist life so much easier.

For starters they have a couple of great tutorials on how to use the actions to the best effect here and here. They were easy to understand and follow along and gave great tips on using the actions.

So what do you get? 56 actions in total; base colour, base tones, colour correction and enhancement and retouching, love the Candy Store actions for quick and speedy face edits. Nice, simple and easy to work with, also completely editable, go ahead and play with opacity and brushes……..the sky is the limit. As everything is done on a layer you can alter blend modes on some and of course change the opacity and fill. Each action usually comes with a pop with instructions or there is suggested opacity and such within the action name or layer name.

Even if you have never done retouching or frequency separation, these tutorials along with the built in tool can have you on the way to fabulous portraits.

Now there is also All in One Actions, which I played with but for my money I prefer to alter each image to my own taste as I go. Even with the Frequency Separation in Portrait Perfection I found there was no glow or halo (around the model) that seems to be present in some other actions, It handles that quite well. You can change the amount of blur you would like to use in the Low Frequency as well. There seems to not be anything for hair, I have asked,  hopefully they can point me in the right direction. Below is three before and after images, including a newborn which I have created a video for, visit my YouTube channel to view Part 1 & 2, as well as the actions I used

kendal-ba_addsydney-ba_addxavier-ba_add

Portrait Perfection Photoshop Actions Collection is available from sleeklens.com

The cost is a reasonable US$49.00 for 56 Actions set, they have various other action collections as well as Lightroom Presets as well. There is also some freebies, so check them out too. I was quite impressed, how the LR Presets compare I am not sure, and I must admit to doing quite a bit of my portraits in Lightroom. These actions will make things quicker and easier in PS, once I am used to it all. I also recommend watching the videos a few times to get a feel for what the different actions do.

If nothing else the Portrait Retouch Actions are amazing I love how you can really make the eyes POP!, love love love the eyes.

P.S. In offering complete transparency I was not paid any money for this review, it is therefore unbiased.

Share Your World – Week 1, 2017

I was reading through Emilio’s SYW and I swear he plucked my answers out of my head in most cases. So it seems I could copy and paste or try and do my own for Cee’s SYW this week……….another year, a new set of questions.

Would you prefer to receive a unicycle, bicycle, tricycle or motorcycle? I used to own a dirtbike, but several accidents (which WERE my fault) made me realise I needed to stay OFF the road. Road bikes and me, or the cars at any rate scary the willies out of me. I applaud the courage and occasional stupidity of road bike users. I don’t like bicycles for the same reason, got hit too many times as a kid and not always my fault. Explain a lot doesn’t it?

What is one thing you’d like to accomplish this year? Honestly? I would love to make enough money with my art, selling pieces, teaching, creating tutorials that I can quite my day job. Fingers crossed.

What was one of the highlights of 2016 for you? Wow, so many, I guess being chosen as Featured Artist a magazine and creating a tutorial for Shiftart.com

Would you prefer to fly a kite or fly in a hot air balloon? I love to watch hot air balloons and kites, balloons are more fun, but you will probably never see me in one. Mind you I did say the same thing about helicopters, but I have actually done that. I don’t mind flying as much in a plane, as I cannot see the ground……..but I am not a great flyer either 🙂

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I am going to change this slightly…….what am I grateful for in 2016? I lost no one in 2016 that I knew personally………..although it was a bad year for famous singers, actors, writers etc…..but personally everyone I know made it through safely. I had no surgeries last year, yay, I made it through the whole year without the need for medical intervention, apart from a recurring blocked ear……but that is nothing compared to near liver and kidney failure and weeks in hospital and ICU, also no injuries requiring surgery, no tests, procedures or ‘stuff’ that required me to even visit a hospital……….THAT I am truly grateful for.

Also my family had a lovely Christmas and NYE, nothing grand of exciting, just togetherness.

dsc_5943

The Week ahead…………..my oh my, 2017 is going to be a blast. I have my first two concept shoots booked in this weekend and I am as keen as punch to get to it, I have really done nothing for the past month and I am done with that. I am going to push myself even further this year and hope to be part of something truly exciting and exceptional. I am a coach/mentor for this years Awake intake and already there is such a buzz of excitement and activity. My Kaizen Project group have taken on 2017 with some very exciting topics and I plan on wrapping up my Dapper Rabbit Concept this year and maybe taking on a new project. And because all that isn’t enough I am doing Brooke Shaden 20 day Portfolio Challenge.

Summer Holiday Movies…

1479803128_fantastic-beasts-where-find-them

Now I know I am usually out and about during my holidays, but being confined to the house with an infirm dog and some unusually high humid and hot days meant we actually either stayed in and watched some movies, or went to the cinema. I’m not normally one to comment too much, I am not a very big movie critic, however;

Cinema

  • Fantastic Beasts and where to find them
    • Truly phenomenal, can’t wait to see where this new series goes, loved every heart stopping minute, great characters and fantastic beasts, my girls both want a Nifler!
  • Star Wars, Rogue One
    • Was no sure at first, didn’t really like the last once much, but Disney came to the party on this one, different enough from the others to warrant a new series and a new audience. The characters were real, dirty, shabby and kick ass, the side kicks amazing LOVE K-2SO, the robot with attitude, no cute and fuzzy here folks, real adult action. Worth watching.
  • Assassins Creed
    • My Children and now hubby all play the Game of the same name, so I have seen enough that I was curious. We went with our daughter and son in law. Can’t say I was impressed, it didn’t make a huge amount of sense, apart from the peripheral Templar bad guys thing. Apparently if you have played the game you have been conditioned to accept jumping around and taking leaps of faith for things that you just simply do not understand lol. Erratic and loud would describe it. Totally unbelievable…….not that that is a bad thing I really like Charlie’s Angel Movies and Bruce Willis Die Hard films too 🙂

At home on TV

  • Finding Dory
    • As expected, cute, with morals and a happy ending, great for big kid and little kids. I enjoy a good Pixar movie, even if a little repetitive.
  • Nerve
    • Going in I had no idea what the plot really was, but man what a ride, sit on the edge of your seats thriller, without the blood and guts, loved it. Very matrix meets Hunger games; well sort of. It’s hard to explain as I have never seen anything like it. It’s Truth or Dare………..without the truth. Internet Game goes viral and turns deadly…….over the top, but it could happen.
  • The Jungle Book
    • To be honest I was expecting more…….I just found it a little lacking, but I am not sure why. Bill Murray was wonderful, as were all the other actors, it was beautifully made, just something I can’t put my finger on. Some pizzazz missing, don’t get me wrong I enjoyed it, just not glued to my seat enjoyed it. I was happy to check my Facebook and IG accounts while watching……..and that’s never a good thing during a movie.

So I saw sic movies, thoroughly loved three, enjoyed two, Assassin’s Creed was mildly entertaining for a little while, but I would never sit through it again. Would I play the game now I have seen the movie? Nope…….give me Tomb Raider any day, made more sense 🙂

Share Your World – Week 52

Week 52, can you believe it, it seems this year has taken everyone by surprise…not just me. I can honestly say I have had such a jam packed year and I am grateful to say that phase, “another year over and I have not accomplished a single damn thing” does not come out of my mouth. That’s not to say I have not sat on my butt and enjoyed doing nothing on occasion, oh but those days I can enjoy and savour, not regret. So Cee has one last lot of questions for this year.

What’s your favourite ice-cream flavor? Either chocolate or rum and raisin, but not just any rum and raisin; it has to be the good stuff. When we were kids we spent our Summer Holidays camping down by the beach, Dad spent the week at home working and drove down for the weekends. On the weekends we all used to do family things. One of our favourites was to drive to Sorrento for ice cream. There was an ice creamery that had over 50 different flavours, to us this was amazing and we always had to try new ones…..it took awhile to try them all. I loved their run and raisin, oh and the Dutch Double chocolate, and the peppermint, not spearmint, has to be peppermint. Oh………I miss good ice cream, these days it is off the cards – lactose intolerant. Yes I know there is lactose free ice cream, but believe me, it just isn’t the same. Soy Chocolate ice cream is disgusting, almond or coconut milk chocolate ice cream is quite nice, but just not the same.

If you were to treat yourself to the “finer things” what would you treat yourself to? I agree with Cee, cook and housekeeper for me please. I hate cleaning (yes I know everyone probably does), but I really do hate it, I love HAVING a clean house, just not the cleaning. Cooking, I don’t mind cooking, but it gets monotonous cooking for just the two of us and Moth is very, very fussy.

Have you ever been drunk? I was young once, and very, very stupid………I lost a year or two in there somewhere, alcohol, drugs and stupidity. I am lucky to have survived it. Not completely intact, but still here………lessons learned. I rarely drink these days, one or two here and there…….two usually seems to be my limit, but I indulged and had three glasses of champagne with OJ on Christmas day 🙂

Complete this sentence: My favourite supposedly guilty pleasure is… OK food, I’ll admit that, but apart from food I guess my photography is a wee bit obsessive, but I think my REAL guilty pleasure is the time on my PC, editing photos, WP, Social media, online Tutorials and creating Art………I can do it for hours and often do.dsc_5784

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I am grateful my little family has survived another year intact, I am glad Christmas is over, I love it, but it can be hectic and stressful. I know it sounds awful but so often I build it up in my head so much, that it is often anti climatic. Every year I say I wont make such a fuss, but I do, only to not have it particularly appreciated. But that’s my beef and I get over it.

The week coming up………I am still off on holidays so that is nice, sleeping in and doing what ever I feel like, it’s heaven. We have another family get together with my Favourite Aunt and her family, that is always loads of fun and no stress; why is that? I am eager to get 2017 started as well, this tail end of the year is such a lull (don’t get me wrong I love that peace & quiet), but this year was so fantastic I am excited to see WHAT is in store for 2017.

I would just like to thank everyone who reads and follows my blog, and to thank everyone whose blog I read, so much entertainment, friendship, inspirational stories and images and tales of wonder. I look forward to more of the same next year.

Psychopath Vs Sociopath and the Masks we wear

So I have spent many months working on my Mask Series, there have been ups and downs and at times I truly wondered where it was heading. Is it finished? I doubt it, there are so many more human emotions and masks I have not covered off, some are multi-layered and cover a few different states. So what is Mask? It is the face we show the world, often hiding our true nature or feelings. It is not always bad, it is not always psychological, but there is sometimes an element of evil in the masks that people wear.

You know that feeling you get when someone stands just a bit too close, or just brushes you, or sometimes they simply walk into the same room; and all the hairs on your arms and the back of your neck stand on end? Or an uncontrollable shiver runs down your spine? Is that our inner voice or instinct telling us to guard ourselves? To put up our own Mask or that there is something not quite right happening. Whatever it is, it is real. Sometimes we do it for our own protection, or to ‘fit’ in………you really don’t like something, but it seems to be all the craze, so you do it anyway (like Peer pressure and smoking, wow I suffered with that one for years afterwards!)

Then there are the Sociopaths and Psychopaths, what’s the difference? Who is more dangerous, how do they get where they are…….perhaps you may know a few? They are not always physically dangerous, sometimes it’s the emotional damage and torture they inflict.

So, please take a moment to read Mask – Behind every mask is a face,
and behind that a story.

1 and 5 – Love Locks

I saw a post a little while back, apologies I cannot remember who or where, they did a post with one image about a location or item and then five quick facts about that location (or item)…it stuck with me, and I thought perhaps I might do a few posts on a similar level. So here we go, Love Locks………..love them or hate them, we seem to see them everywhere in our travels across Australia.

DSC_1188

Love Locks, Blue Lake, Mt Gambier, SA

Fact 1

A love lock or love padlock is a padlock which sweethearts lock to a bridge, fence, gate, or similar public fixture to symbolize their love. Typically the sweethearts’ names or initials are inscribed on the padlock, and its key is thrown away to symbolize unbreakable love. Since the 2000s, love locks have proliferated at an increasing number of locations worldwide.

Fact 2

This latest tradition is believed by some to have been inspired by an ancient custom, which is believed to have originated in China – where lovers lock a padlock on a chain or gate and then throw away the key, symbolically locking their love forever.  Around the world, cities from Moscow to Rome (And Australia) are filled with fences, bridges, and poles adorned with padlocks.

Fact 3

They are now mostly treated by municipal authorities as litter or vandalism, and there is some cost to their removal. However, there are authorities who embrace them, and who use them as fundraising projects or tourism attractions.Melbourne recently had 20,000 love locks removed from Yarra Bridge by the City Council citing that the locks were weighing down and stretching the safety rails.

Fact 4

Even the Pont des Arts bridge in Paris which was reportedly covered in 45 tonnes of love locks and had them removed due to the structural integrity of the bridge. That is a LOT of padlocks and twice as many keys!(Don’t forget those thrown away keys).

Fact 5

Padlocks begin rusting very quickly once exposed to the elements. This rust spreads almost immediately to metal fencing or structures to which they are attached. A rusting bridge is NEVER a good thing. The locks are polluting the rivers, most people, after attaching their locks, toss the keys into the river or lake below as part of the “romantic ritual” – but have you stopped to consider that this is actually POLLUTING these waterways and creating an environmental problem for the wildlife? There are tens of thousands of rusted keys throw into these waterways and is as bad as throwing away your plastic water bottles or other trash.

So what is your stance, romantic or destructive?

Cee’s Share Your World – Week 49

I don’t often do this challenge, mainly due to so many other balls in the aire at once, but today I thought I might;

What would be your ideal birthday present, and why?

Firstly, no presents, if I want something I buy it, so I don’t need anything. My daughters and I now have a special thing that they are adults……..and we do it one at a time, let me explain

  1. Coffee in bed, surrounded by my furbabies
  2. With each daughter individually, so I can spend one on one time with just them, we go out for lunch or dinner (it doesn’t matter and depends on their shifts). Then followed up by say a movie, a theatre performance and perhaps coffee, afternoon tea or a nightcap (depending on the time) afterwards. It is special time I get to spend with them. Sometimes it is not necessarily on my birth day, but close to it (we also do it for Mother’s Day)
  3. A lovely lunch out with family or friends, or even an afternoon tea, a dinner, picnic, bbq or what ever.

What color would you like your bedroom to be?

I have previously had red, but I found it uncomfortable (not sure why), for many years I had a very deep blue, it was very relaxing and de- stressing, I now have a soft dove grey, it is very relaxing and calming; as a bedroom should be. My carpet is dark grey, and all my trim is snow white, with timber furniture. I have no plans to re paint, I am very happy with it. (And so is Moth. Not that I want it, but I can’t have pink and floral with him around).

Would you prefer snowy winters, or not, and why?

I live in Australia, we currently have summer, parts of Australia are summer all year round; just have a wet and dry season. I live in Melbourne, so we get wet, we get cold, but we don’t get snow. I have seen snow, it is pretty, but it needs to be very cold to snow – I don’t like the cold so much. So I don’t think I would like to live with snow.

Would you rather go a week without bathing, but be able to change your clothes, or a week without a change of clothes, but be able to bathe?

Oh, horrible, dread the thought, I would have to bathe and hope I don’t sweat too much or get dirty in the clothes I am stuck with……….do we get use perfume or deodorant?

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

Grateful for my everything really, I have a great supportive husband, two wonderful daughters and a son-in-law. Fabulous friends I do not see as often as I would like. I have a lovely house, a lovely car, a good job, I still have both my parents (although age is sneaking in on them both), my beautiful, and unconditional loving fur (and aquatic) babies.

The last bit is easy, as of Friday afternoon, I have no work for almost 4 weeks! I have a week of social engagements this week then Moth and I are off up the coast, for a week or so before Christmas. Can’t wait.

til next time…….

Tuesday’s Tales – The Mirror Lies

I could ramble on about shoots from the weekend, but it was pretty much same old, same old……..Master 10 who ended up in the ER is fine, no stitches required and hopefully shoot can be re scheduled.

Instead I am going to ramble on about something else; Me. I did two posts yesterday which featured Selfies (you really don’t need to see them again, but you can if you want, click here). Were I stated that they didn’t feel like me. I got quite a few people who agreed with what I said and a few lovely people who said I looked wonderful……..honestly I thank you all!

Trust me when I say I am not a vain person, very much the opposite. I look in the mirror every morning, I brush my teeth, brush my hair, do my make-up, make sure I look presently before I head off to work; you know the usual stuff. I don’t kid myself, I an nearly 50, over weight, out of shape (well actually round is a shape isn’t it?), but overall I don’t look too bad, I suppose. AND THEN someone takes your photo. OR you are brave enough to take your own. I swear I don’t look like that in the mirror! Is the Mirror lying? They say the camera shows all, it tells the real truth, then why do all my subjects look fab-u-lous in the photos i take, as they do in real life?

We say we are our own worst critic, and I know I certainly am, but I swear that person I see in the photos is not the same one I see in the mirror. Does anyone else have this problem? Don’t get me wrong after many years of self loathing I am comfortable with myself, I am no longer my own worst enemy. I can look back on my life and see the impact I have made, I know I am a strong independant woman, I have confidence in my abilities (well mostly, I still have some reservations at times), I am a good person with a kind heart. I can sleep at night knowing this. Age does bring some comfort and some wisdom.

So WHY does the camera show this fat, frumpy, nearly 50 year old woman, I have no idea who she is? Even my hubby Moth has improved with age, he is a very handsome, distinguished gentleman, who got better with age…………it’s not fair! He says I am just as beautiful to him as they day we met, very sweet but all lies! lol Still it’s nice to hear it.

My Grandmother used to say, youth is wasted on the young – and she was right. When I was young and beautiful I didn’t enjoy it, I spent years loathing this small blemish or that, my bum was too big, my hair was too wavy, my eyes not blue enough, my nose not perfectly straight – oh what I would give to have it all back……..I would parade around knowing I looked gorgeous! Wear beautiful clothes, not the baggy sweaters and jeans I used to wear!

Oh dear, now I’m ranting; again! Oh well I am sure that I am not alone, for those of you under 40, enjoy your youth, and for those of us over 40……..enjoy life now, as we are wise enough to accept and young enough to enjoy it!

til next time, happy snapping…..
