In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “An Extreme Tale.”
I must warn you, this is true, it’s NOT a NICE Story. It’s about a very violent crime, I will put no names (to protect the innocent) and there will be no pretty pictures, this is about how I lost a very dear friend, and I will probably never be the same again, and neither will His family. I’ve never really put this to paper, but now after the Coronial Inquest, it’s been a long 5 years. Maybe it’s time to put this to bed. If you do not wish to read further, I do not blame you.
The phone rings in the middle of the day, it’s a Sunday, I don’t know why, but I get chills before I have even answered it. It’s a really close friend of mine, “Hi” I answer, she immediately bursts into tears “He never came home last night, the Police said He’s been hurt and He’s in Hospital having surgery.” I rushed right over. Once I arrived the full impact of what happened is discovered. He wasn’t accidentally hurt, he was killed! It’s as simple as that He was killed. They revived Him at the scene and sent him to hospital. But he was killed at the scene.
We arrived at the hospital, He lay there in a coma, un-recognizable, his face beaten to a bloody, bruised pulp, life support the only thing sustaining him. The only thing I recognize as Him was his tattoos. This wasn’t an accident, this wasn’t a robbery gone wrong, this wasn’t even a ‘Coward Punch’, this was not even human; we knew the person who did this to Him. 7 long days he lay there with no response, we all visited Him, talked to Him, hell I even Prayed for Him, but eventually we had to say Goodbye to Him. The machines were all turned off, he took his final breathe and then He was gone.
There was grief, still is (I tear up just writing this) but there was mainly anger. Anger at a Health system gone so wrong, which did so little to protect my Friend, He is now gone from our lives for ever. The Evil one who did this did not receive fair punishment for his crime from an unfair justice system, who lets the victims suffer and the guilty get away virtually scott free. We have to live with this for the rest of our lives and he is in jail for a few measly years, all because the health care system did not think he was dangerous!! If we knew then, what we know now, things would be very different. He would never have left the house with the Evil one and ended up dead.
Apparently no one is really to blame it’s just the system………how does that help the victims?
A Hug and a nod of understanding to all who have survived through the pain, anger and grief of violent crime; it is very different from illness or accident, and there are so many to blame.
