Last week we had a brief respite from the horrid Winter weather we have been experiencing, we had a few days of blissful conditions; blue skies, sunshine, calm gentle winds and warmer temperatures…heaven.
So hubby and I packed up our camera gear and headed to Healesville Sanctuary for a day communing with nature and animals. Healesville is full of Australian Native animals, birds and reptiles. We did not quite make it all the way around, but we have purchased a yearly pass, so we can come back anytime we like. Our daughter is also a volunteer here, so hopefully, we can visit on a day she is working.
I may be Australian, but so many of our animals we do not see very often, I have only seen one echidna in the wild since I was a kid, I don’t think I have ever seen a wild platypus, Koalas, Kangaroos and Wombats I have seen plenty, but not locally. Since we started travelling with our photography I have seen more. Birds are easier to spot, however, some are rare and not seen very often, others are thriving. Reptiles…some I have seen on my travels, mostly though on TV or in Zoos.
I took great delight this day in the echidna, the rainbow lorikeets, Kangaroos and Wallabies and parrots of various shapes, sizes and colours. The Birds of the Sky raptor show is a great one to visit, sadly I fear each time I visit, my photos get worse. I just have never picked up the knack for bird photography. Still, it is fun watching them.
Sadly Winter days are short and it was not long before it started getting chilly, we will come and visit again, for now here are a few photos.

Lovely photos. I guess most of us only see wildlife in its natural habitat occasionally. I did once see a baby echidna by the side of the road when coming back from the Tahune Airwalk, so cute. There are platypus in the Kermandie River at Geeveston but I’ve never had a good sighting, just the back end of one disappearing below the surface. I think the evening would be better.
David and I did visit Healesville Sanctuary once. It must have been the late 70s or early 80s. You could still get a train to Healesville then.

Oh how fabulous. The train to Healesville I beleive may still run as a tourist thing perhaps once a month, but then that may even be finished. People use the train tunnels to photograph in all the time

It used to be a rail motor that you changed to from the electric train and I heard they closed it but never investigated if it had been reopened or taken over. Might have to look into that on my next trip to Melbourne.

I have never been on it myself, have just heard things from others. I think it is steam now but I could be wrong
